Los Angeles Harbor College Fine Arts Gallery is pleased to present Time Out of Mind, the nature photographs of Ray Carofano. The exhibition will open with an Artist’s Reception on Saturday, March 17, from 4 – 7 PM.
Ray Carofano’s nature images have been variously described as transcendent, mystical, emotionally resonant, hauntingly beautiful – the combination of superb craftsmanship and artistic intuition. All true.
The images comprising Time Out of Mind adhere to the edict “Don’t shoot what it looks like. Shoot what it feels like.” These new works display a compositional and spatial dynamic reminiscent of classical Chinese landscape painting executed in ink on silk with soft, rubbed brushwork, striving to reveal nature’s inner spirit over outward appearance. Up close, or at distance, intimacy is the shared cornerstone of these ethereal works. Ansel Adams’ analogy that “The negative is the equivalent of the composer’s score, and the print the performance” can be fittingly applied to Carofano’s decades long practice. As an acknowledged master of darkroom technique, it’s not hard to imagine his labors paralleling those of the master painter.
Ray Carofano’s photographs have been widely exhibited in the United States and abroad including solo exhibitions at Fototeca de Cuba, Havana, Cuba, the Museum of Photographic Art, San Diego, CA, and Galeria de Arte Fotografo, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Fototeca de Cuba, Nat’l Archives, Havana, Cuba, Museum of Fine Art, Houston, Texas, U. of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Santa Barbara, CA, among others. He is represented by Couturier Gallery in Los Angeles.
Curated by Ron Linden and funded in part by generous support from Linda Lee Bukowski, Time Out of Mind runs through May 4. Gallery hours are Monday – Thursday, 11 AM – 4 PM, and by appointment. For visuals or additional information please call 310-600-4873 or 310-233-4411
