Shoeshine Parlor – A Portrait
Echoing the theme of 2019’s exhibition Close at Hand, the images comprising Shoeshine Parlor are very close; literally less than two hundred feet across the street from the photographer’s studio.
A camera hidden surreptitiously behind a darkened glass carries the implication that might indicate voyeuristic intention. The opposite is the case in Shoeshine Parlor – the images are dispassionate, objective, documenting versus peeping, or spying, as days go by for the better part of a year. The randomness of these images allows multiple narrative readings dependent on their sequencing. Carofano’s static images become surprisingly animated.
